My Blog

I love to create! The problem is that so many things catch my imagination and ideas are more plentiful than time. I am a wood sculptor, painter, craftsman, metal sculptor and software developer. The last one is my profession the others are extensions of my passion for design and construction.

I am a wood sculptor, and my favorite subjects are realistic birds, fish and mammals. I work in Tupelo, a light close grained wood that is best worked with power tools like dental grinders. I research my subjects extensively and like to develop realistic representations. I paint my subjects with acrylic paints using airbrush and fine detailing brushes. I am the current president and active instructor for the local woodcarving club where I teach power carving and both brush and air brush painting techniques. We have recently finished a class on carving and painting a baby chickadee. You can see the results at www.ChamplainValleyWoodCarvers.org. I draw and paint landscapes and have incorporated some my drawings into some wood carvings as backgrounds.

My craftsman side finds an outlet in developing a wide variety of furniture pieces. The pieces range in size from a 9’ x 4’ rustic dining table and chairs, to 12" x 16" rustic accent tables. I use local woods as well as driftwood and stone to develop one-of-a-kind pieces. I also design and build cabinets and other practical furniture pieces. My biggest project to date is the 7 years (So Far) I have spent rehabbing a 60 year old log cabin into our cottage.

A welding class and access to some unusual pieces of scrap metal lead to one of my newest passions, metal sculpture. Having developed several small garden art pieces, I jumped into a major work a 25’ long Scrap-a-Saurus. I have recently completed several metal tables and small sculptures. A work in process is a full sized moose, this has had several iterations including the armature of steel tubing and a skin of bark. The bark didn't work like I wanted so i removed it and put it aside to consider my options and over the Christmas season my wife had it put in the front garden covered in lights. Merry ChrissMoose. I have recovered it from the front garden and now I am modifying the work now to cover it with all steel tubing.

I have just finished a new split rock table and a couple of steel sculptures including a recently completed commissioned piece of a garden Herron. I had the chance to do whatever I liked and a bird was suggested as a possible subject. I had no particular result in mind but i wanted to try to incorporate some granite stone slabs into the work. A split slab of granite and a pile of scrap steel pieces later an out came the sculpture. This one is a free spirit creature that brings a smile to my face, I like bird with lips.

My works are now found in the Main Street Artisans gallery in Lake Placid and the Tip Top Frame Gallery in Plattsburgh. I rarely do commission work, and when I do it’s only for subjects that are of personal interest or for a special collector. The PBS WCFE Mountain Lake Arts Auction is a great way to acquire one of my works of art. You can see a selection of pieces I donated in the WCFE section
